What are the top highlights of the show this year for the visiting public?

The daily flying display promises to be truly spectacular highlight of this year’s public weekend. It will incorporate a mixture of modern civil and military aircraft such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Airbus A380 and the Viking Twin Otter 400; some historic icons like the B-52, Vulcan, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, as well as the exciting aerobatics teams like the world-famous RAF Red Arrows and The Blades.

In addition to the flying, other highlights on offer throughout the public weekend will be the Space Zone in Hall 3, Richard Nobel’s BLOODHOUND supersonic car will be on display and there will also be fun fair for our younger audience to enjoy.

And for industry professionals?

During the trade show from Monday to Friday we have a number of exciting aircraft which are making debuts at Farnborough. Boeing will launch the new 787 Dreamliner which will be on static display for the first two days of the show and Airbus will display the A400M in the flying display. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 will also make its Farnborough debut and we will have the world debut of the Viking Twin Otter 400. In terms of the other business features of the show, in addition to the those existing such as our civil and military delegations programmes, we have also introduced a number of new initiatives for this year in order to increase the return on investment for exhibitors taking part and the value of attending for visitors of the show. These include a new themed programme of conferences featuring government and senior industry speakers, a Meet-The-Buyer event taking place over two days and UAS flying demonstrations for the first time ever at Farnborough.

Of course Farnborough is a major industry trade show first and foremost and as such is a forum for big deals – how much money changes hands at airshows such as Farnborough?

In 2008, over US$88.7bn worth of orders were confirmed during the Airshow. This figure more than doubled that recorded in 2006. Obviously with the current economic climate it is difficult to predict what order figures will be this year however a positive indication might be that are we sold out for exhibition space and there has been some significant speculation in the media already of companies who plan to sign major deals at the Farnborough International Airshow 2010.

Has the whole aviation sector been rocked by the world financial crisis or are there still growth areas?

Different parts of the sector have been hit to varying degrees, for example the business jets market was hit very hard while the large passenger jets sector had large order book backlogs that cushioned the blow somewhat. We’re now moving past the worst of it and, providing there are no more problems in the wider economy, Farnborough will see the recovery get under way.

Longer-term, growth in places such as India and China will drive the sector with the UK’s Europe-leading 17 per cent market share being worth an estimate £352 billion over the next 18 years. Our world-leadership
